Elite Driving instructor training...27 years of excellence

How to Become a Driving Instructor

If you love driving, and you like meeting people, then you might also like to help people achieve their dreams. If so then a career as a driving instructor might be the perfect choice for you.

What's the  benefits?

Well can you Imagine:

  • Working for yourself, being you own boss and in control of the days & hours you choose to work
  • Having your own marketing team- finding all of your customers
  • Having your own first-class sales team talking to prospective customers and booking their lessons with you
  • Having a crack team of specialists working with you to build your reputation and grow your business
  • Helping people learn a valuable life skill, and the satisfaction of knowing you've helped improve their life

Sound good? So how do you make the dream become a reality?

Well before you can take someone for lessons and receive payment, you need a DVSA ADI (driving vehicle standards agency approved driving instructor) licence. And for that you will require training to pass the stringent DVSA tests.

The training is in three parts, but first you'll need a criminal record check reference number, see this video for instructions about applying. Once you have your reference number you can apply to the DVSA to start training.

How long does the training last?

That depends on you, your work/life commitments, the training company you choose, and the DVSA for tests.

If you choose us as your training provider, we have the following courses that range from:

  • Learning at a steady pace: Some people prefer to take their time when learning something new, or their life commitments restrict the time they have available to learn.
  • Learning quickly: For some people the quicker the better, but every process has hurdles, and the big ones for potential driving instructors are waiting for the DVSA exams. The waiting lists can often be weeks or even months in advance. And like jumping hurdles you have to jump over one hurdle before you reach the next, which means you must pass the part one exam before you can book the part two exam, and pass part two before booking part three. In many cities in the UK waiting times for all three DVSA exams can take up to 6 months and beyond, and so your training should be based around these waiting times.
  • Fast Track: Ambitious people want to learn in a week or two, but this style of learning only benefits a small group of individuals, especially those who have a photographic memory and like the pressure of intensive learning. Getting short notice tests with the DVSA can be a problem, but we chase cancellations on a daily basis.

Why choose us?

We've been in the driver training space for over 27 years training people to become driving instructors, helping them build a reliable local reputation, and the perfect self-employed business without the stresses and strains of going it alone.

Our masterclass training program is unique because we only offer one 2 one training, which means all of your in-car training is focussed around just you.

Cheaper training courses provided by others can often involve car sharing, which means that you spend part of your paid time in the back waiting for your turn. Although some people say you are getting experience from others, if they are not at the same level as you, then you're not gaining any benefit.

Our training courses also include workshops which will give you additional training knowledge, and you'll also learn how to operate and run your own business, manage your customer expectations, and how to give an exceptional customer experience, ready for when you qualify.

We also see you as a valuable addition to our business, and so the standard of our training is exceptionally high, because If we help you successfully qualify as a driving instructor, you might decide to join our winning team...

The best instructors are nice people who do what they say they are going to do. Reliable people who turn up when they say they are going to turn up. And people who believe in helping other achieve their dreams no matter what it takes.

And as a driving instructor, you’ll be free of the restraints of offices; factories and warehouses. You’ll benefit from a sense of achievement, meets lots of new people and build an awesome reputation with local people wanting your help.

You choose the time you start and finish work, so you can spend time with your family when it suits you. You can work longer hours in the summer enjoying the longer evenings, and shorter winter hours to avoid the miserable nights.

You can take your holidays to suit yourself, and bag some fabulous bargains when you can go at the drop of a hat.

If you're a parent that requires flexibility, you can work around the kids school times. You can drop them off in the morning before you start work and finish in time to pick them up after school. It's a great feeling when you don't have to rely on others to run them around on your behalf.

And if you want to spend more time with your partner, you can mirror your hours to match theirs. After all their job might not be as flexible yours.

Invest in the right people if you want to become a successful driving instructor

Only 20% of driving schools are at the top of their game, while 60% are just getting by, and worse still 20% are struggling, which could contribute to the fact that less than 30% of people who embark on a career as a driving instructor actually ever qualify (source DVSA, Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency).

Train around your work commitments

Some driving schools will ask you to give up your holidays and spend a few weeks in B & B while you train with them. Others may even ask you to leave your employment and work for them while you’re training. Why would you give up your job without the guarantee of another career waiting for you?

But plenty have been talked in to doing so in the past only to fail to qualify as a driving instructor and become unemployed.

We won't ask you to give up anything.

When you join Elite you can train with confidence. We’ve helped many people to become successful driving instructors, and we work around your existing work /life commitments.

There are many things that make up a good driver training company, and we’ve worked hard to make ours the very best there is.

In my book, there's a breakdown of how much you can earn as a driving instructor

I was hooked. I've met both Kev and Stuart from the training team and both guys were instantly likeable and put me at ease

"Having looked into the possibility of becoming a Driving Instructor in 2009, I made my first mistake.... I called the wrong people.

I didn't fall for the usual offers, promising the Earth that are maybe associated with larger national companies, but even though i did try to go for a local company with a fairly large profile, i soon became disillusioned.

Meeting in a car park.

Sharing time with other people in the car as opposed to a one to one.

It just didn't feel right and i didn't feel i was getting the undivided attention that I personally need to progress quickly.

Lets be clear. If becoming a Driving Instructor was easy, we'd all do it and the roads would be full of instructors.

It's not.

But picking the right place to start can make it easier.

I saw an advert for Elite on the internet whilst looking for an instructor for a family member, and the "itch i didn't scratch" from 2009 came back.

I filled in an online form with my details and the first thing that impressed me was that i got a call from Kev within 30 minutes.

When i asked who Kev was, He told me he was the owner of Elite.....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's who you want to deal with, whichever company you call..... The Owner!

Within a matter of days i was having a "Taster Session" so to speak with one of the Trainers at Elite. A kind of try before you buy if you will.

I was hooked. I've met both Kev and Stuart from the training team and both guys were instantly likeable and put me at ease.

Since then, with support from Kev in the office, i passed my Part 1 with a score of 92% and have recently passed my Part 2, with Stuart with a near perfect drive.

I would add at this point, that the level at which i was trained was not just to scrape through the test.

It became apparent that Stuart had pushed me to the best i could be and before my test he was very calm, which rubbed off on me.

He's become a friend who I trust to get me the career i want and when he told me "you've got this test in the bag" before i was joined by the examiner, it gave me the confidence to relax and give it my best.

He was right!

I've got the right team behind me at Elite.

Pauline or Kev answer the phone when i call with what maybe "Daft" questions. The office door is always open.

And the guy sat next to me coaching me gives me confidence and we have a good laugh as well.

I cant wait to get started on the career I've wanted for so long. I wish I'd called Elite sooner".

Thank's guys.

#drivinginstructor, #drivinginstructortraining

"I found out about Elite Driving School by scrolling through Facebook one day, I signed up for the emails to follow Kevin's story about his experience as a driving instructor and his training.

I found it interesting and it re-ignited my passion to become a driving instructor, as I had a bad experience 3 years before.

From chatting to Kev on the phone about Elite's training, I realised this is what I wanted to do.

I went into the office quite apprehensive, after a couple of minutes I relaxed and had a great time chatting about the training.

I decided to book my training with Elite because Kev explained the training course I would be on, and how his team would help me achieve my goals. I also felt it was the best option from all the other training companies I have contacted.

I’m a full time mum and as you can imagine I get very little free time for study and training. So Kev worked out a schedule that wouldn’t be too stressful for me.

I started training a few months ago and so far I’ve passed both part one and two exams at the first attempt and I’m now looking forward to the final exam and starting a new career as a driving instructor with Elite.

I can highly recommend Elite because they work around your availability, they’re always on hand with help and support, and their training system is easy to understand and learn".
