Practical test
There are a lot of stories told about driving tests, but really, it's simple. Drive safely, the way your instructor has taught you, and you will pass. There are no tricks, no catches, no quotas. Just drive safely. You will have reached this standard before your instructor recommends you take the test.
So if you can do it for your instructor you can do it for the examiner, which means that you can do it when driving on your own after the test.
Which is why it's simple. How you are taught to drive, how you drive on your test, is how you drive for life: Safely.
The test
| The practical test last for about 40 minutes.
To begin the examiner will check your documents and ask you to sign declaration about residency and insurance for the test car.
You will be asked to read a vehicle number plate as an eyesight check.
You will be asked two car safety check questions about basic car maintenance.
You will then be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The reversing exercises will be chosen from:
- Reversing around a corner
- Turning in the road
- Reverse parking

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.
At the end of the test your examiner will tell you if you have passed, and offer feedback if you have not.
Your Elite Driving School instructor will guide you through the training process and advise you whern you are ready to apply for, and take, your driving test.
We understand that you may feel nervous about the test. We have developed programs for the test day which are designed to put you at ease and ensure that you are prepared for your test.
Your instructor will accompany you on your test if you feel this will help. If you are unfortunate enough not to pass your instructor will sit in with you when the examiner explains the areas you need to develop so that they can help you to prepare to pass your next test.
We will also share your delight in your success. Well done you.
If you have passed your driving test "well done", have you thought about pass plus?
The Pass Plus scheme is aimed at new drivers to help them become better drivers. To join Pass Plus you need to find an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) to train you. Your ADI will help you complete the six training modules to pass the training course.
About Pass Plus
Pass Plus is an established training course aimed at new drivers. It was designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.
Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years after passing their test, due to lack of driving experience.
Pass Plus builds on your skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, to help you become a more confident driver.
